Hallam’s James Buckby and Morgan Shillito have won the 2024 Canvas Big Weekender pairs event, defeating Bangor’s Ben James and Daniel Marsden 4-0 in the final.

It was all Hallam in Friday’s final as the pair raced off to a 2-0 lead, capped off by a double 20.

The pace of Bangor’s scoring picked up, with a flurry of missed doubles from both opening up the match a little.

But in the end it was Hallam who furthered their lead, making up for a missed chance at a 116 out.

The final leg was a masterclass from the Hallam pair, who knocked in scores of 140 and 133 as well as an 18 darter.

It takes Buckby one step further from a final placing at June’s Summer Showdown, where he lost out to PDC tour card holder Adam Warner.

For Shillito, it is a much-deserved UDUK crown after an impressive innings from Hallam.

66 pairs battled it out to advance to the last 32, with Dan Outwin/Sam Telford, Oliver Trevatt/Harry Peters, Daniel Barclay/Jorden Hamilton, Spencer Hall/Isobel Lee, Morgan Shillito/James Buckby, James Challinor/Sam Bogle, Ryan Pass/Janek Hill, Reuben Breetveld/Tom Morris, Zach Hodgson/Callum Hodgson, Elliot Taylor/James Dolley, Mark Nassralla/Jacob Timmins and Phil Want/Toby Saunders all progressing with a perfect record.

Amongst those to win through from the first knockout stage were Luke Davies and Jack Quinn and Oliver Wilson and Deck Ingber, with a string of 2-0 wins helping to thin down the field.

Dan Outwin and Sam Telford were shock departures in the last 16, with the favoured Trent pairing of Phil Want and Toby Saunders also exiting. Daniel Barclay and Jorden Hamilton (Stirling) and John Lynch and Benjamin Housley were among those to make it through.

The quarter-finals saw the slayers of Outwin/Telford depart, as well as the accomplished Hallam team of Oliver Wilson and Deck Ingber.

The last 4 proved a close encounter all around, with Morgan Shillito and James Buckby edging past Daniel Barclay and Jorden Hamilton 3-2 and Ben James and Daniel Marsden overcoming Ryan Pass and Janek Hill 3-1.

Tomorrow will see the marquee singles event take place, with over 140 expected to participate.

One skilled player will get their name on a UDUK singles shield which goes back more than a decade.
